Quantex Toronto Facility

Quantex’s Toronto facility is conveniently located in the Toronto Portlands at 309 Cherry Street just off Lakeshore Boulevard. The site was formerly an oil re-refinery operated by Canadian Oil that was a fully owned subsidiary of Shell Oil Company. Re-refining services ceased operations several years ago and the site was taken over and revamped in the spring of 1999 by Quantex. It is currently operates as a waste treatment facility.

When Quantex assumed operations at the site there were approximately ten million litres of liquid waste that had been abandoned by the previous operators. The bulk of the waste consisted of complex mixtures and emulsions that the previous operators had not been able to successfully process. Quantex Technologies developed and implemented a successful strategy and skillfully processed all of this waste ahead of proposed schedules. Quantex then applied for and was granted a new Certificate of Approval by the Ministry of the Environment in March 2000. The new Certificate of Approval better reflects present site operations and was subsequently revised in June of 2002 as the facility is being upgraded to keep current to the latest environmental regulations.

The Toronto facility is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Energy (Provisional Certificate of Approval #A280276) to receive and process:

  acid solutions: 111, 112, 113, 114
  alkaline solutions: 121, 122, 123
  aqueous salts: 131, 132, 133, 134, 135
  misc. organics: 141, 143, 144, 145,146,147,148,149,150
  organic wastes: 211, 212, 213
  fuels: 221, 222
  resins and plastics: 231, 232, 233
  halogenated organic wastes: 241,242
  oily wastes: 251, 252, 253, 254
  mixed wastes:

261, 262, 263, 264, 265, 266, 269, 270

The Toronto plant specializes in the treatment of liquid bulk wastes as well as offering waste transfer services. The facility is operated with similar treatment, standard waste receiving, record-keeping procedures and technology as the Kitchener facility, to promote operational cohesion between the two plants. The facility has a 15 thousand barrel tank farm and is able to receive and process large volumes of liquid industrial waste.

The plant also receives and processes various drum wastes such as petroleum sludge, paint waste, solvents and lab packs and operates one of the largest petroleum sludge solidification systems in Southern Ontario. This process covers the receiving and treatment of oil sludge from industry and in some cases includes the on-site removal and transportation of the sludge.

Petroleum sludge is received in bulk at this location and analyzed prior to off-loading. It is then heated and centrifuged to separate out the solids and recover the petroleum phase. All oil phases are recycled into a fuel product. Solids are then removed for fixation and disposal.

Annual volumes are impressive with approximately 45 million litres processed per year.

The Toronto facility operates a fully equipped lab that specializes in the analysis and identification of waste streams. The company employs a full time technician to handle the analaytical work, assist in the treatment, and offer process solutions nessessary to operate a diverse facility. The lab utilises outside facilities for quality assurance and quality control.

The Toronto facility operates four modern vacuum units that provide transportation solutions for waste products. The company has completed a number of special projects that involve the handling and transportation of heavy sludge and has been able to complete special projects on time and on budget.

The company offers a variety of industrial services to industries in Canada and the United States. Waste solutions include plant decommissioning, underground subway services and industrial site remediation. These services are uniquely customized to address the needs of the customer.
